The Light of Christmas

As we made our way through the lights on Temple Square with the Greenes, I found myself in awe at the beauty that comes from LIGHTS.  How symbolic that these lights represent our Savior who is the light of the world.  It is He who makes everything beautiful and bright.  The night was cold, but the lights seemed to chase away all feelings of darkness or cold.  So does our Savior.  The highlight of the evening, for me, came with the visit to the Christus.  Easton was in awe.  When we carried him up he just stared up at the statue with reverence in his eyes.  Coming from a hyperactive 2 1/2 year old, this was a special moment.  We asked him what Jesus was doing and he said that He was giving loves (hugs).  He reached out his arms in the same way and told us he wanted to give Jesus a love.  So I gave him a big hug and told him that it was a hug from Jesus.  As we were walking away from the Christus, he waved goodbye, and when we sat back down on the couches, he told us he missed Jesus.  It was a tender expression of what many were feeling.

Nostalgia and "saudades" for heaven come easily to me, but even more easily at Christmastime.  How amazing it is to think that the Savior knows each and every one of His brothers and sisters so well.  The throngs of people at Temple Square further emphasized how miraculous this doctrine really is.  He knows me.  And He knows you.  The only test that remains is how well we will come to know Him in the days we are permitted to sojourn on this earth.

Cinnamon Oil, Eye Slices, and Neurosurgeons

Last Thursday we had a rather interesting day.  We spent the morning at the bustling stores going Christmas shopping and then rushed home to give Tate a one hour nap.  Then we ran Easton over to Gram's so we could get Tate's pictures taken at Sears.  Everything appeared to be going well.  We were just sitting in the waiting room and Tate was playing at one of those wooden tables that have those twisty, swirly wires that you move the beads through.  Patrick and I were sitting by him quietly talking.  The next thing I knew I looked over at Tate only to see him falling backwards with the table crashing down on top of him.  The table landed on his neck and one of the twirly wires sliced the corner of his eye open.  He started screaming and bleeding and I couldn't believe the unfortunate timing.  Isn't it ironic?  Needless to say, he wasn't too thrilled to be getting his picture taken.  He wouldn't hardly smile.  We did manage to get a couple of cute pictures and fixed one of the close-ups with sepia to hide his poor little gash.
On our way home, Gram called me and asked me to stop by the Urgent Care on our way home to drop off Easton's insurance card.  Of course I started to panic wondering what had happened.  It turns out that he had gotten in to my grandma's cinnamon oil and had rubbed most of the bottle all over his face, ears, and neck.  He couldn't breathe due to the strong smell and his face and neck turned cherry red.  My grandma ran him over to the Urgent Care.  Thankfully, after four baths and lots of soap and prayers, Easton's normal color came back and he hasn't experienced any adverse effects since.

Although these experiences seem to be traumatic, we chose to see them as tender mercies.  What if the wire had moved a milimeter closer to Tate's eye?  It could have cut his eye.  What if Easton would have rubbed the oil in his eyes as well?  He could have been blinded, or at the very least, in severe pain.  Truly, the Lord is always watching over His children with loving care.

And now for today's update.  We took Tate to see the pediatric Neurosurgeon at Primary Children's Hospital.  He was very kind and after measuring his head, we found that Tate's head is near the 50th percentile!  We were so excited!  He said that he looks completely normal and healthy.  He offered to do a CT scan if we needed reassurance to know that everything was all right, but he said that if it was his own child he wouldn't worry about it.  After considering the unnecessary radiation that little Tate would have to go through, we opted to wait on the scan.  The doctor told us that if his head doesn't grow any more in the next few months and we are concerned we can always do a CT scan then.

One of the most interesting things was Tate's growth chart.  They plotted the last two measurements that our normal doctor took over the last few months.  In September his head was 43 cm. and in November is was still 43 cm.  This was what caused our doctor to be concerned and refer us to a neurosurgeon.  This meant that in September his head was somewhere around the 25th percentile and then in November it dropped below the 10th percentile.  Now it's up to almost the 50th.  The neurosurgeon couldn't quite figure it out.  He was pretty convinced that there had either been a mistake in one of the measurements or a mis-plotting of the size.  However, I was there for both of the September and November appointments and I am sure that there were no errors.  In November, we even did at least 2 or 3 different measurements only to find the same thing.  I truly believe that it was because of everyone's prayers and fasting.  Thank you, every one of you, for your prayers and concern in Tate's behalf.  I'm not sure exactly how it occurred, but I do know who made it happen.  It was a miracle from the Lord brought about by the faith and prayers of our family and friends.  Thank you so much for helping us create Tate’s miracle.

Birthday Blues

Tate's Birthday was just about a week ago (I'm posting this at a later date so that's why it looks like I'm posting before Tate's birthday ever even happened).

I honestly can't believe that he has already been with our family for a whole year. The days have passed so swiftly...I still think he's my little baby, but with him learning to walk, I'm realizing that he's turning into a "big boy" as Easton would say.

The Johnson family threw a big December birthday party for all the December birthdays (there happens to be 4). We had soup bar, a little pool, and opened presents. It was fun to see Jacee and Chad's new little Nelson not even a month old. He's darling.

Then the day before Tate's birthday, we had a party for him at our house. The Greene family came to celebrate that with us. His cake turned out adorable even though it was a last minute throw-together...thanks Mom for your professional skills in that arena!
He just didn't feel like himself

Sadly to say, Tate was under the weather for both Christmas and his birthday. He didn't feel like partying. In fact, he spent the time scowling....I felt so bad for his little body. He was trying to get over a bad bout with the flu and a very high fever. Thanfully, we were able to get him to smile a little bit towards the very end of the night.
Thank you, Tate, for being you. So many of our dreams have come true because of you. The spirit you bring to our home is celestial. We have loved watching you grow, learn to smile, learn to crawl, and learn to laugh. We have loved being your parents and only pray that we will be able to deserve you and your sweetness as the days continue to unfold. We love you Tate! Happy Birthday!
